Comparison between A36 and A283C

ASTM A283 Gr C consist of four grade of material (A,B,C, & D) of carbon steel plate of structural quality for general application.

ASTM A36 covers carbon steel plate, shape, and bar of structural quality for use in riveted, bolted or welded construction of bridges and building and for general structural purpose.

From material scope, both ASTM A36 and ASTM A283 are the carbon steel of structural quality for general application.

ASTM A283 plate steel features low and intermediate tensile strength carbon steel plate of structural quality. It has four common variants, each represented as a separate material.This specification covers four grades of carbon steel plates of structural quality for general application. Steel samples shall be melt processed by either open-hearth, basic-oxygen, or electric furnace. Heat and product analysis shall be performed wherein steel materials shall conform to required chemical compositions of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, and copper. Steel specimens shall also undergo tensile tests and shall conform to required values of tensile strength, yield point, and elongation.

A36 is a structural-quality mild carbon steel used in general construction applications including bolted or welded construction of buildings and bridges and common machine parts.such as Shim plates,Gusset plates,bridge plates,bearing plates,robot bases,column base plates,press parallels,press platens,tooling plates,machine plates,machine frames and pedestals,steel table tops,base plates,mold & die,machine mounting plates,etc.ASTM A36 steel is generally available in the many forms i.e. it is available in rectangle bar, square bar, circular bar and also steel shapes like angles, H-beams, I-beams, and channels. This steel plate is also known as mild steel in South East Asian Region.
