API 5L Gr.B (L245) Basic pipeline steel: An overview of characteristics and applications

API 5L Gr.B (L245) concepts

API 5L Gr.B (corresponding to ISO L245) is the most basic pipeline steel grade in the API 5L standard, with a minimum yield strength of 245MPa (35ksi). As an entry-level pipeline material, it is widely used in low pressure fluid delivery systems and is one of the most widely used steel grades in the oil and gas industry.

API 5L Gr.B (L245) features

Economical and practical: Selection of basic pipe with the best cost-benefit ratio

Excellent processing performance: excellent cold bending and machining performance. Good welding performance, suitable for field construction

Base strength: yield strength 245-450MPa, tensile strength ≥415MPa

Environmental adaptability: The operating temperature range is -29℃ to 427℃, and the service life can be extended by anti-corrosion treatment

Delivery condition: Hot rolled condition (HR) : The most commonly used form of delivery

Normalizing state (N) : Used to improve tissue uniformity

Welded pipe status (ERW/HFW) : straight seam or spiral welded pipe form

API 5L Gr.B (L245) application

Low pressure oil and gas gathering network

City gas distribution system (working pressure ≤4MPa)

Water mains for water works

Structural support pieces and pipe gallery brackets

Chemical medium low pressure transmission pipeline
