A572 Grade 50 Steel Surface Prep Before Painting

Paint fails for one reason most of the time: poor surface prep. A572 Grade 50 is no exception.

Start with cleanliness. Mill scale, rust, oil, and dust all block adhesion. For most structural work, SSPC-SP6 (commercial blast) is the baseline. For aggressive environments, go to SSPC-SP10 (near-white) – it costs more but pays off in coating life.

Surface profile matters too. A 1.5 to 2.5 mil anchor pattern gives paint something to grip. Too smooth, and the coating peels. Too rough, and you get uneven coverage.

Watch the edges. A572 Grade 50 cuts and shears leave sharp corners where paint pulls thin. Grind them to a slight radius – a small step that prevents early rusting at edges.

Temperature and humidity? Steel should be at least 5°F above dew point. Otherwise, moisture flashes on the surface and ruins adhesion.

One more thing: Don't let prepared steel sit around. Blast and coat the same day if possible. Surface rust returns fast, and you'll be redoing the work.

Prep right, and your coating system will last years longer. Skip it, and you'll be repainting ahead of schedule.
