What is JIS SS400 equivalent ASTM steel material

JIS SS400 steel is a material grade and designation defined in JIS G3101 standard, which is a Japanese material standard for hot Rolled steel plates, sheets, strips for general structural usage.

JIS SS400 equivalent ASTM steel material is ASTM A36. Both of them are designed for structural purposes, in common application cases their mechanical property can achieve the same purpose.

However, JIS SS400 steel only requires S, P less than 0.050, other requirements are not made. While ASTM A36 steel requires C, Si, Mn, S, P and other elements.

The tensile strength of JIS SS400 steel is 400-510 MPa and the yield strength is 245 MPa. While the tensile strength and yield strength of ASTM A36 steel are 58-80 Ksi (400-550 MPa) and 36 Ksi (250 MPa).
